Thai Airways International (TG) outgoing president Piyasvasti Amranand told the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand that TG has good future prospects.

The recently ousted president said the carrier had reported a first-quarter profit of THB3.6 billion ($ 118 million). He said preliminary second-quarter figures were good, with a traffic load factor of 78% for April.

“Things are moving well,” he said “financially I believe the company is strong.”

He said the financial position of the company could improve further in the long term as new generation planes entering the fleet have lowered its average age to eight from 11 years and its fuel and maintenance costs.

He said the company’s target profit of THB6 billion ($ 189 million) was still achievable providing the measures he put in place remain.

Amranand said he had accomplished more than he originally planned in his two years and seven months in the job. He said he had expected to be removed since the new government took over last year ( ATW Daily News, May 23 ).
