Gogo to offer Ku-satellite connectivity prior to Ka-band service

Gogo has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with global satellite operator SES to bring Ku-satellite connectivity service to commercial airline passengersfor a near-term solution before the Inmarsat Global Xpress Ka-satellite service becomes available ( ATW Daily News, April 13 ).
“We feel it’s less about the technology that’s being used and more about finding the right technology for each aircraft and each aircraft’s mission—whether that’s by using our exclusive air to ground and ATG-4 technologies, Ku-satellite or, in the future, Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-satellite technologies,” Gogo president and CEO Michael Small said.
Gogo expects to be able to install the Ku-band systems on commercial aircraft by the fourth quarter and will use Ku-band capacity on current and future SES multi-beam satellites serving the continental US, the Atlantic Ocean region and Europe. SES operates a worldwide fleet of 50 geostationary satellites.
“By partnering with SES, Gogo aims to provide … reliable and seamless satellite coverage,” Small said. “Whether it’s Gogo’s exclusive air-to-ground and ATG-4 technologies, SES’s Ku-band satellites, or Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band satellite technologies, we plan to offer a full range of connectivity solutions for any aircraft mission.”
Gogo and rival OnAir have been named as Inmarsat partners tasked with bringing the Global Xpress satellite service to the market once available ( ATW Daily News, Dec. 1 ).
