CANSO and ACI jointly promote A-CDM implementation

The Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO) and the Airports Council International (ACI) have signed a memorandum of cooperation to promote the global implementation of Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM).

CDM facilitates the exchange of data between all stakeholders to help them take better informed decisions under rapidly changing operating conditions, and optimize existing resources.  It can help reduce aviation system inefficiencies, allowing airports and airspace that are operating close to capacity to benefit from increased resiliency and predictability.

ACI director general Angela Gittens said, “Airports are central to making A-CDM work and we are committed to this partnership with CANSO to bring enhanced efficiency, resiliency and improved quality of service to all our customers. This increased level of collaboration with CANSO is important to facilitate the global roll out of A-CDM.”

Under the terms of the MOC, CANSO and the ACI will support development of a globally standardized data interchange technical framework between airlines, ANSPs, airport operators and ground handlers, and compile an A-CDM implementation best practices guide for airports and ANSPs. The two organizations will also promote global standards and encourage the creation of A-CDM pilot project teams, contribute to ICAO’s Aviation System Block Upgrade (ASBU) Modules that deal with A-CDM, and keep stakeholders updated on the status of A-CDM implementation.

CANSO DG (Interim) Samantha Sharif said, “By improving the flow and quality of information between ANSPs, airports and other key stakeholders, A-CDM can deliver significant efficiency improvements across the board, from passenger processing, to customs and immigration, to reduced fuel use.”

Meanwhile, A-CDM has gone fully operational at London Heathrow (LHR), making it the fifth airport in Europe to implement this tool for reducing airport and en-route delays.

Munich, Brussels, Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle have already implemented the system and trials were conducted at LHR, which is operating at 99.2% capacity, during April and May.

Reducing taxi times helps reduce fuel burn, and with 1,300 flights a day, this could translate into a saving of up to 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year at LHR.

BAA director Airside Tim Hardy said, “It’s crucial that we continue to look for ways to improve operational efficiency. A-CDM is about more than technology, it’s about behavior change. It relies on every area of the airport’s operations working collaboratively to share information in pursuit of this common goal.”
