Taipei-based Far Eastern Air Transport is planning a major expansion in the China mainland market after suspending operations for three years.

Launched in 1957, Far Eastern Air Transport is a privately-run carrier. It suspended operations in May 2008 after accumulating heavy debts (ATW Daily News, May 19, 2008), but was approved to resume operations earlier this year following a financial restructuring.

The carrier opened a new route Taipei-Shijiazhuang route in October and announced it would launch Chengdu-Kaohsiuing Jan. 15 and Haikou-Kaohsiuing Jan. 21. It also plans to start routes to Hefei Nanjing from Kaohsiuing and Huiyang to Taipei in the new year.

The carrier said earlier it would focus on cross-strait routes and regional routes in Asia for the next 10 years.
