Just five months after it inaugurated the service, Hong Kong Airlines (HX) has announced it will suspend its all-business class service between Hong Kong and London Gatwick from Sept. 10.

The airline said the decision was taken following a review of its European strategy as a result of the continuing weak economic outlook in Europe.

HX president Yang Jian Hong said: “We believe that a regional model focused on Asia Pacific is most appropriate for Hong Kong Airlines at this stage of our growth. Our key focus will be building our regional network and strengthening our business across China, South East Asia, Japan and Korea.”

Yang said the three 116-seater all-business class Airbus A330-200s that operate the London route would be redeployed to charter flights.

Earlier this week, the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Dept. (CAD) froze further fleet expansion plans for HX citing safety concerns (ATW Daily News, Aug. 7).
