Norwich Airport to expand MRO activity

Norwich Airport (NWI), in eastern England, has unveiled plans for a major expansion of MRO activities.

The regional airport will lodge plans with local councils by the end of the year to develop the northeast corner of its site totaling roughly 100 acres as an aviation-related business park.

Currently, MRO operators are clustered south of the single 09/27 runway. The new site will be based north of the runway, around the now unused 04/22 strip, which dates back to World War II. A substantial taxiway to the operational runway is still in place, allowing access.

If planning permission is granted, the airport anticipates development work starting around the second half of next year, with the first tenant operational in the second half of 2014.

That tenant will be aircraft painting company Air Livery, which will move from its current site on the airport to a new 160,000 sq. ft. facility of five linked hangars plus offices. Three of the bays will accommodate Boeing 737-size aircraft, with the remaining two able to house 757-size equipment. The airport sees Air Livery as the catalyst that will attract other MRO operators.

Current MRO operators at NWI include KLM UK Engineering, which also operates an engineering training school.

Cost of the installing the necessary infrastructure and the initial buildings is estimated at £15 million ($ 22.5 million). The site is capable of taking 850,000ft² of hangar and ancillary office space.
